Dombeya Wine Showcase & Lunch at the Long Table
Dombeya wine farm is situated on Haskell farm, in the heart of Stellenbosch and neighbour to Rust en Vrede. The farm is named after the surrounding dombeya trees, which bloom spectacularly in season.
We were hosted by wine maker Riani Strydom and viticulturist and assistant wine maker Wikus Pretorius, to sample their range of their latest wines and feast at the Long table.
It was a heartbreakingly beautiful day; more spring than winter and we were reminded once again of the joys of living in southern Africa.
The Dombeya range is marketed as a consumer friendly, ‘lifestyle’ range, while the higher end wines are bottled under the Haskell label. The majority of the grapes used come from the Haskell vineyard and a small portion comes from Riani’s property in Simonsberg.
At 13.5 hectares the farm is small, but 80 tonnes are produced, I’m assuming annually.
We sampled the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, 2010 Chardonnay, 2008 Boulder Road Shiraz, 2008 Merlot, 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2007 Shiraz was awarded 4 stars in the Platter guide and a gold medal in the International Wine & Spirit competition.
Wikus took us on a mini tour of the vineyard, explaining his organic methods of farming and showing us his composting heap.
Lunch at the Long table, was served under umbrellas and we enjoyed a prawn risotto, stuffed guinea fowl, spectacular roasted potatoes with lemon zest, roasted veggies and a layered cheese cake and sponge dessert.
After a leisurely lunch, we could not resist tasting and purchasing some gems from the Haskell range and we were expertly assisted by tasting room manager Werner Els.

Love the farm, their wines & the restaurant. Your lovely pictures do them justice (except of course, the one with me with a fork stuck in my mouth or…) Tiehie.
Signs of a good time had. Hey, it could be a pic of your bashing a chicken teeth barred..oh wait, that’s of me. 😉
