I was asked to contribute to the Summer Memories Food Section in the December issue of Oprah Magazine South Africa, featuring 6 food personalities. (I'm a food personality?!) I chose a South Indian Crab Curry, that despite the heat and complex spiciness, is one I always enjoy with my family during the summer December holidays, each year without fail. This is my version - inspired by my mother's Crab Curry and Rick Stein's Coconut Chilli Crab.

Sincere thanks - SA Blog Awards 2011 and a light but indulgent and ever so slightly boozy fresh and brandy soaked cherry Eton Mess - perfect, chewy vanilla meringues, folds of fluffy, cool kirsch infused fresh cream. Easy to prepare and festively flavoured - Cherry Bomb Eton Mess.

Pimms & Star Anise Stewed Plums and Cherries with Amaretti Biscuits

Christmas in summer poses a challenge and an awkward one at that. Despite the weather, we're almost attuned to think of and crave Christmas and holiday desserts that are rich, warm, comforting. For this holiday dessert, I used stone fruit, poached in Pimms (usually enjoyed cold in tall glasses with cucumber) and aniseed and some still fresh, layered with aniseed infused fresh cream and a few broken amaretti biscuits. You could call this a deconstructed summer Christmas pudding.

A girl, a boy, a box and two thickening waistlines

When I considered the topic for the current Cold Coffee Club project " Would you let your waistline determine where you live", I thought I had firm ideas of how I'd answer the question. But, as this piece of tourron still lingers in my mouth, the feeling I get tells me that I do allow my waist (my mouth, my senses, my greed and desire) to determine what I value as pleasure. There are culinary destinations (Spain, Italy, France, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey) far more glamourous, far more enticing to many than Cape Town. To us, Cape Town with all her flaws and third world problems is culinary mecca.
